CIAT offers training in measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in real time

With the aim of measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in real time, CIAT carried out the first training in the Eddy Covariance system under the project “Ecological Productivity Management Information System in Colombia (EcoProMIS)”.
EcoProMIS is an online platform that will run algorithms for crop data generated in real time and will help farmers to improve their crop management skills and better understand the impact of agricultural practices on farming productivity and the environment.
“Colombian rice and oil palm growers need to improve their productivity and stabilize their income to be competitive in the global market. As a result, climate change-related demands will be addressed responsibly by researchers,” said Catalina Trujillo, a CIAT SoiLS research assistant part of the organizing team and training participant.
The main outcome of the online platform will be a public-private partnership, including farmers and research institutions, aimed to improve stakeholders’ environmental, technical, and financial efficiency of their processes. Furthermore, it will support value chain decision makers, such as insurance companies, government organizations, and food processing plants, in their commercial processes and interventions.
This 38-month project is supported by a grant of £3.9M from the UK Space Agency’s International Partnership Programme (IPP). IPP is a £152 million pound multi-year programme funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). It uses UK organisations’ space knowledge, expertise and capability to provide a sustainable, economic or societal benefit to undeveloped nations and developing economies.
CIAT will continue to carry out more training sessions within this project’s framework to instruct research staff on techniques useful in measuring the impact of crops; the effects of ecosystem management on biodiversity; greenhouse gas emissions; and productivity.
